There comes a point in the career of every major blogger, where they look away from their writing alone, and begin to look at their blog as a business. As much as the internet is loaded with stories of bloggers ’selling out,’ monetizing a blog and operating as a business entity can often be a great strategy for bloggers, allowing them the benefits of a higher income, and their audience the results of a larger blogging budget.
However, there is one thing that irks any blog reader: intrusive marketing. From never-ending affiliate links to needlessly flashy banner advertisements, the number of annoying factors that can pop up on any one blog is staggering. Bloggers do not need to use intrusive and annoying marketing to generate an income, do they? Here are some innovative ways to make your blog more profitable, without having to turn to intrusive advertising.
1. Amazon’s Affiliate Program
Amazon’s affiliate program is one of the most popular around, allowing anyone to generate a scalable online income through the huge amount of products available on Amazon.com. While commissions are relatively low (around 4% for beginners) the range of products makes sales likely, and the quality of products on offer means that there are no refunds and chargebacks to worry about.
Bloggers can generate income through relevant Amazon links. For example, if your blog features many books, add affiliate codes to each and open the possibility of earning a small commission from every one sale.
2. Google AdSense
Google AdSense is great when used sparingly, and horribly annoying when plastered all over your blog. We have all seen atrociously unreadable made-for-AdSense style websites, and they are certainly not what we want to see in our favorite blogs. However, a small block of AdSense advertising can be a decent income generator for a popular blog, especially if it deals with a niche that attracts high per-click costs.
3. Offer Services on Your Blog
A lot of bloggers are incredibly talented people, especially those that work in online fields and technical areas. If you have got skills that could translate into major contracts, temporary jobs, or even full-time employment, advertising them on your blog is a great idea. Of course, it is best to be relatively non-intrusive with your services — add a separate page to your blog and target potential clients, not just every other reader. With a sizable archive of talent-demonstrating posts, you could find your blog landing major clients from all over the world, ensuring constant income.
4. Sell Your Own Products
This is an especially popular idea amongst authors-turned-bloggers, who build upon their blog’s popularity to launch a supporting book or e-book. When you have got products that you think would appeal to your blog’s audience, it is stupid not to at least offer them. From adding a feature post explaining why your book is great, when it is available, and why people should by it, to adding a simple sidebar banner, the amount of opportunities to sell your own products through a blog is limitless.
